Top TV Honors Went to The Walking Dead, Hannibal, The Flash and Outlander

at the 42nd Annual Saturn Awards

 BURBANK, Calif. – June 23, 2016 – With host John Barrowman (of Torchwood and Arrow fame) at the helm, the 42ndAnnual Saturn Awards journeyed to a galaxy far, far away as J.J. Abram’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominated with 8 Saturn Awards, followed by Guillermo Del Toro’s Gothic Horror masterpiece Crimson Peak, with 3, while for television Saturn favorites The Walking Dead, Hannibal, Outlander and Haven received multiple wins, and Marvel’s Daredevil won the first Best New Media Series tonight as the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films presented the 42nd annual Saturn Awards, the top honors for genre entertainment.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was named Best Science Fiction Film, Best Actor (Harrison Ford), Best Supporting Actor (Adam Driver), Best Writing (Lawrence Kasdan, J.J. Abrams, and Michael Arndt), Best Music (John Williams), Best Makeup (Neal Scanlan), Best Editing (Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey), and Best Special Effects (Roger Guyett, Patrick Tubach, Neal Scanlan, Chris Corbould).  Crimson Peak was named Best Horror Film, Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain) and Best Production Design (Thomas E. Sanders).   Other highlights included Charlize Theron for Best Actress (Mad Max: Fury Road), Ridley Scott, Best Director (The Martian), and Marvel’s Ant-Man dwarfed the competition with a win for Best Comic-to-Film Adaptation.

In TV categories, The Walking Dead once again dominated with three Saturn wins for Best Horror TV Series, Best Supporting TV Actress (Danai  Gurira), and Best Younger TV Actor (Chandler Riggs).   “Fannibals” had their just desserts as Hannibal took home Best Action/Thriller TV Series, as well as Best Supporting TV Actor for Richard Armitage.   Outlander earned Caitrionia Balfe her second consecutive Best TV Actress Saturn as well as the Saturn for Best Fantasy TV Series; The CW’s DC Comics series The Flash won its second Best Superhero Adaptation on TV, genre favorite Bruce Campbell nabbed a long-overdue Best TV Actor for Ash Vs. Evil Dead and William Shatner earned a Best Guest Performance on a TV Series for Haven, which was also honored with the President’s Award.

Coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, Nichelle Nichols received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Brannon Braga (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager, Enterprise) received a Special Achievement Award.   Uber-producer Simon Kinberg, whose films won numerous awards tonight, received his own George Pal Memorial Award.  Eric Kripke was presented the Dan Curtis Memorial Award from his Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki, Better Call Saul was recognized for its excellence in television, and Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist took flight with the Breakthrough Performance Award.

The 42nd Annual Saturn Awards were presented for the period covering Feb. 1, 2015, to Feb. 11, 2016.
