THE 4th ANNUAL CARNEY AWARDS 2018
Jackie Watson, the French reporter, was in true character on the red carpet at the 4th Annual Carney Award Show held at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
The Carney Award Show, aka the Character Actor Award Show, was named after the gifted mimic and actor Art Carney who crossed the line between comedy and drama. The award show was created in order to honor and celebrate the character actors who are the true driving forces behind all movies. Although the faces of most character actors are often recognized, their names are not.
Jackie had the wonderful privilege of meeting and speaking with some of these great actors. First up was actor Brian Carney who is also the son of the late Art Carney. Brian explained that some of the most talented actors in Hollywood are not the ‘big guys’ in the movies, but rather the character actors who hold the movies together. We agree!
Jackie was also given the privilege of speaking with other actors at the event such as character actress Obba Babatundé. Carlise is a true character actor who has no problem claiming her rightful place on the ‘big screen’ throne. This bubbly and humorous actress proudly and loudly proclaimed, “We make the lead actors look good.” And, that you do Carlise. You go, girl!
Other actors who were kind enough to speak with Jackie were: American television and film actor Dale Godboldo; American character actor and comedian M. Emmet Walsh; American actor Dan Lauria; actor Gregory Tapscott; American actor Michael Kostroff; actor Joe Morton; and American stage and movie actor Obba Babatundé.
Jackie closed down the red carpet with one solid question to some of the favorite character actors: “If all the character actors were taken out of a movie, what would the movie be like? Actor Steve Weber stated, “It would just be a movie full of movie stars, and that’s boring. You need character actors for flavor.” We think Jackie agrees J American character actor and rock, blues, and country musician Gregg Henry answered, “It might be a boring movie.” Yep. You are correct Gregg. American actress Erin Murphy stated, “You can’t have the lead actor without the character actor. They are called supporting actors because they support the entire process.” Agree!
